HOW THEY DID IT: Game Recaps

Black college teams went up against some of the best teams in NCAA Div. II football last week and came up short.

Valdosta State 32, Fort Valley State 10
FVSU (0-1, 0-0 SIAC) led defending NCAA Div. II national champ VSU 10-9 at the half but was shutout 23-0 in the second half to fall to the Blazers. After falling behind 9-0 in the first quarter, a 27-yard second quarter interception return by Junior Taliaui got the Wildcats on the board and a 26-yard Jake Grubbs field goal just before halftime put them in the lead. But VSU got a TD and field goal on its first two second half possessions and then returned a Zedrick West (6-12-1, 99 yds.) pass 31 yards for a TD late in the third quarter to go up 25-10. They later added a fourth quarter score. FVSU QBs West and Willie Copeland (9-14-0, 138 yds.) combined to pass for 237 yards but neither could get the 'Cats into the end zone.

 Carson-Newman 45, Shaw 24
CNU's veer attack repeatedly exploited holes in the Bears' run defense to amass 476 rushing yards, almost nine yards per carry, and score on runs of 19, 28, 59, 21 and 32 yards in knocking off the defending CIAA champs (0-1, 0-0 CIAA E). Shaw QB Jermonty Kimbrough (35-54-3) passed for a school-record 433 yards and two TDs and set school records for attemps and completions as the Bears took to the air after falling behind 17-0 at the half and 24-7 through three quarters. One of Kimbrough's three interceptions was returned for a 71-yard first quarter TD. WR Kenneth Robinson had 10 receptions for 146 receiving yards. The Bears' vaunted rushing attack was held to 65 yards on 30 carries.

 Catawba 20, Winston-Salem State 10
Catawba (1-0) scored 20 unanswered fourth quarter points to come from ten points down and spoil the season opener at home for the Rams (0-1, 0-0 CIAA W). WSSU's 1,000-yard rushers Martin Hicks (10 car., 45 yds.) and Jed Bines (23 car., 80 yds., 1 TD) pounded repeatedly on the Indians whose defense stiffened in the fourth quarter to keep them out of the end zone. Meanwhile, Catawba got two field goals and used effective passing from QB Brad Roach, who was 15 of 19 in the second half, paving the way for two five-yard scoring runs.
