BCSP Notes . . .
Carter gets the reins at FAMU
Carter, most recently a defensive line coach at Temple, also had a distinguished professional playing career spanning 12 seasons with the Denver Broncos from 1975 to 1986, appearing in two Super Bowls (1978, 1987). A star prep athlete in football and track at Stranahan High School in Florida, Carter, went on to a stellar collegiate career at the University of Miami, becoming the first African American player to receive All-America honors as a Hurricane football player in 1974. Prior to joining the Temple staff in March 2004, Carter had served as the New York Jets' Defensive Line Coach for three seasons (2001 to 2003) and also served as the Washington Redskins' Defensive Line Coach for two seasons (1999-2000). He first coached in the NFL with Denver under Dan Reeves from 1987-88, directing the Broncos defensive line while also assisting with strength and conditioning. He was Defensive Coordinator and Strength and Conditioning Coach at Howard from 1989 to 1993, before serving as the Defensive Line and Strength & Conditioning Coach at San Jose State in 1995 and 1996. At Howard, his defenses were ranked nationally several years, highlighted by the 1989 club, which led NCAA Division I-AA in both total defense (220 yards per game) and scoring defense (10.5 points per game). Carter, and his wife Karen are the parents of four children, Andre (26), Diandra (21), Alvin (18) and Joshua (17). Andre attended the University of California, and was selected seventh overall in the 2001 NFL Draft by San Francisco and still plays for the 49ers.
Green to replace Stribling at Mississippi Valley State
"Any of the candidates could have done an outstanding job, but the thing that kept sticking out about Coach Green is that he has that Division I experience that we were looking for to advance our program," said MVSU President Dr. Lester Newman. "I commend Lonza Hardy and Dr. Gerald Peoples for working to get that strong of a pool of candidates together." Green, the 1999-2000 Conference USA Coach of the Year, replaces the legendary Lafayette Stribling, who retired earlier this summer after garnishing over 300 wins in 22 years of service to MVSU. Green most recently served The University of Southern Mississippi as head basketball coach from 1996-2004. During his tenure there he led the Golden Eagles to a 123-109 record, which included a Conference USA regular season championship (1999-2000) and two trips to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). "The fact that James Green is being hired is a testament to his skills as a coach and to the likelihood of him coming in here and having a dramatic impact on our program from day one," said Hardy, MVSU's athletics director. "We look forward to Coach Green coming in here and getting our program ready for this season and beyond." Prior to coaching at Southern Miss, Green served Iowa State (1994-96) and Alabama (1992-94) as assistant basketball coach. While at Alabama, he helped lead the Crimson Tide to the NIT (1993) and into the second round of the NCAA Tournament (1994). Green has also held assistant coaching positions with Texas A&M University-College Station (1990-92) and The University of Idaho (1988-90), where the Vandals won two Big Sky Conference championships (1989, 1990) and made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament (1989, 1990). "I'm very excited to have an opportunity to work with Mr. Hardy, Dr. Newman and the entire Mississippi Valley State University family," said Coach Green. "I've had a long time to follow Coach Stribling. He's someone well respected throughout the state of Mississippi. It's just an honor to be selected to try and fill those shoes."
Kerr to lead Morgan State athletics
"Our athletics program is an integral part of the 20-year Morgan Renaissance that we so proudly celebrate this year," said MSU President Earl S. Richardson. "We have made significant progress in many areas of the university and our athletic programs are no exception. With the wealth of knowledge and experience that Mr. Kerr brings to Morgan, we are convinced that he can help make the difference for our program and our student athletes." Before coming to Morgan, Kerr was the athletic director at Southern University from 2000 to 2004. He was instrumental in the expansion of Southern's A.W. Mumford Stadium, and spearheaded the $2.5 million video spectator scoreboard project, giving Southern the largest I-AA scoreboard installation in the country. Kerr also served as assistant Athletic Director at Youngstown State University from 1993 to 2000. Ranked 75th on Sports Illustrated's 101 Most Important Minorities in Sports in June 2004, Kerr has served as a member of two of the NCAA's most prestigious committees, the Division I men's basketball tournament selection committee and the issues committee. A graduate of Colorado State University, Kerr was an All-American Collegiate basketball player and was drafted by three professional sports teams, including the Phoenix Suns (NBA), Utah Stars (ABA) and Dallas Cowboys(NFL). He has coached high school basketball teams to state championships in New Jersey and Ohio, and is also an accomplished artist. "I am very excited to be selected as the new Director of Athletics at Morgan State University," said Kerr. "The opportunity to serve in this capacity and in a leadership role for the Bears marks a commitment that my family and I appreciate. I look forward to the coming years to help take the program to the next level and build on the great reputation and mission of the University through athletics."
Bell's experience lands him DelState AD job
In coming to an agreement with DSU on a three-year contract, Bell fills a vacancy that has existed for over a year. The proven administrator with 30 years of leadership experience in higher education athletics takes over the helm of a DSU athletics program that has already been aggressively steered in a direction toward new levels of excellence. Over the last year DSU Women's Head Basketball Coach Ed Davis served as interim athletics director. Dr. Sessoms said that extensive NCAA Division 1A experience was a major criterion in the search. "Having interviewed almost two dozen first-rate candidates, it was clear that Chuck brought to the table experience and dedication to diversity at the Division 1A level that is unparalleled. He is a perfect fit for the University at this time in its development." Mr. Bell served as the director of athletics at San Jose State University (1998-2004), Utah State University (1992-1998), as well as an associate athletics director and interim AD at the University of Wyoming. He has also served as a basketball coach at the University of Wyoming, Colorado State University, and Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill.
