TRAGIC DEATH: Michael Brim, a former Virginia Union standout cornerback who spent eight seasons in the NFL, was killed Tuesday in a shootout with another man in Richmond, Va. He was 39. Richmond police said Brim had been involved in a dispute with Gary Miles, 42, over a woman. Police found Brim about 10 p.m. with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest in Miles' brother's driveway. Miles suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. He was listed in serious condition Thursday at VCU Medical Center. Brim, a Danville, Va., native, was a fourth-round selection of the Phoenix Cardinals in the 1988 NFL draft. He went on to play for Detroit, Minnesota, the New York Jets and ended his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. He suffered a career-ending injury in 1995. Brim leaves behind a wife and four children.

BEST FINISH: Former Jackson State golfer Tim O'Neal had his best finish on the Nationwide Tour this past weekend, finishing in a tie for 26th with a score of 2-under par, 286 (69-70-75-72) at the Virginia Beach Open. O'Neal pocketed $3,345, his best payday of the year. O'Neal has played in five Nationwide Tour events, making the cut in three. The Savannah, Ga., native has also received entry into two PGA Tour events (Bell South Classic and MCI Heritage) but was not able to make the cut in either. His latest result leaves him 81st on the Nationwide's money list with $7,723.
