Spring Championship wrap-upCIAATRACK and FIELD The women won their ninth consecutive title amassing 238.5 points, the most scored by any Lady Falcons squad during the championship run. Bowie State, which placed sixth a year ago, enjoyed its best finish in more than 15 years by placing second with 111 points, while North Carolina Central captured third place with 77 points. Doris Thompson of St. Aug's repeated as the Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete by winning the shot put (13.34 meters) and discus throw (40.94m) for the second straight year, and placing second in the javelin throw (30.76m). Fellow Lady Falcon Johnsie Liles was awarded Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete honors after winning the 200-meter dash (24.81) and 400m dash (54.75), while also running a leg of the second place 4x400m relay squad. The St. Aug men made it eight straight titles by tallying 213 points. Virginia State placed second with 108 points, while NCCU finished third with 91 points. Patrick Wright of Livingstone College earned his third consecutive award as Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete after winning the shot put (14.47m) and discus throw (42.86) for the third straight year, while also placing fourth in the javelin throw (43.88m). Andre Faulcon of Virginia State was voted Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete after winning the 100m (11.06) and 200m (21.73) dashes, while also placing second in the long jump (7.07m) and seventh in the javelin throw (37.60m). Adrian Findlay of St. Aug's finished his standout CIAA career by winning his fourth straight conference title in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 50.95. BASEBALL TENNIS On the women's side, Fayetteville State defeated Shaw in a tie-breaker to claim the championship. It would come down to FSU's Dana Maynor's 6-1, 6-0 win over Shaw's Ronke Oyelade that came in the sixth-singles in the semi-final round. The format would crown the Lady Broncos the 2005 CIAA Champion as Fayetteville State University would post a 53% winning percentage over Shaw in head to head matches. GOLF The Broncos had a two-day team score of 589, 25 strokes better than runner-up North Carolina Central's 614. Johnson C. Smith was third with a two-day score of 645. Bryan Demby of NCCU captured low medalist honors with a CIAA-record score of 135 over the two-day event. Demby shot a four-under-par 67 on day 1, and then followed with a three-under-par 68 on day 2. FSU's Milne was the only other golfer to break par over 36 holes, shooting a one-under-par 140 over the two days. The Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University defeated Fayetteville State University by the score of 12-4 on Saturday afternoon en route to the 2005 CIAA Softball Championship. SOFTBALL
MEAC TENNIS The number one seeded Bulldogs' men's team, defeated number two Florida A&M, 4-1 in the title match of the finals at the Sanlando Tennis Center. The Championship match, postponed on Saturday due to rain, was a rematch of last year's final also won by S.C. State. The Bulldogs' Andrew Mawire was named Outstanding Performer winning the fourth and deciding match to seal the victory for S.C. State. The win was the second straight title for S.C. State and the fifth overall. The Lady Bulldogs (23-1) defeated Hampton, 4-2 in the championship match ending the Lady Pirates three-year reign as MEAC Champions. Gisel Brito, who finished 3-0 in the tournament, won the fourth and deciding match in straight sets to earn the Outstanding Performing Award. S.C. State won their second title in school history. The Lady Bulldogs won the inaugural MEAC Women's Tennis title in 1986.
