Bowling for titles
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Bethune-Cookman and Fayetteville State are the HBCU participants in the 2005 NCAA Bowling Championships.

"There are 46 NCAA schools (that bowl competitively). It is awesome to be considered among the best," said UMES Head Coach Sharon Brummell, whose team is making a return trip to the championships.

Because there are only 46 schools the NCAA ranks all divisions, I, II and III, into one field. There are only two Div. III schools, one of which is New Jersey City University, a Final Four participant last year. Thirty (30) of the 46 schools involved compete at the Div. I level.

The Mid Eastern Athletic Conference, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) are the only conferences that completely sponsor the sport.

The Central Florida Sports Commission and the Sunshine State Conference will co-host the championship, which will be held this week (April 14-16) at BRC Wekiva Lanes in Orlando, Florida.

In addition to UMES, B-CC and FSU, the eight-team field includes: Central Missouri State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Nebraska, Lincoln, New Jersey City and Sacred Heart. All teams were selected at-large.

While it is B-CC's and FSU's first trip to the Elite Eight of College Bowling, it is the Hawk's second in only two years of the event. Winston-Salem State represented the CIAA in the event last year. Nebraska won the inaugural title in 2004, defeating Central Missouri State in the championship match in Houston.

Earlier this season UMES qualified for the International Bowling Championships (IBC) for the third straight year. UMES is the only NCAA school to make that field of 16. That event will take place about one week after the NCAA Tournament in Rockford, Ill. They even have one individual competing for the National Single's Title. Ariel Givens earned a spot in the IBC championship that will take place on May 22-24 in Milwaukee.

Hampton Track Qualifiers
Hampton Lady Pirate track standouts Yvette Lewis and Kellie Wells qualified for both the NCAA regionals and nationals at the annual Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium held on campus of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina on Saturday.

Lewis, a sophomore from Newport News, Va., won the triple jump standings with an impressive 12.35m (40-06.25), good enough to qualify her for the NCAA Regionals next month.

Wells, a senior all-American from Richmond, Va., took first place in the 100 meters (11.74) and the 100 meter hurdles (13.29), both times good enough to qualify her for the nationals. Lewis finished second in both events (11.82 and 13.64).

Lewis went on to claim third place in the 200-meters (23.87 seconds).

SIAC Spring Championships
The 2005 SIAC Spring Sports Championships are being held April 13-17 in Albany, Ga. Champions will be determined in softball, baseball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's outdoor track and field.

Ballin' at the P-I-T
CIAA Player of the Year, 6-10 center Lee Cook of Bowie State, along with all-conference guards Luqman Jaaber of Virginia Union (CIAA) and Devin Green of Hampton (MEAC) were among the only black college seniors that played last weekend before a host of pro scouts at the 53rd Portsmouth (Va.) Invitational Tournament, the annual showcase of college basketball senior players.

Cook and Green, a 6-6 guard, played together on the Tidewater Sealants squad that finished 1-2 in the four-day event. Green scored in double figures in all three games and totalled 37 points and 18 rebounds for the three games. Cook played in two games and finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Jaaber's squad, the Norfolk Sports Club, also finished 1-2. The six-foot Jaaber scored 12 points, had nine assists and just two turnovers in the three games.

All-star weekend in Cleveland
The second annual Ohio Classic/Black College All-Star Game will return to Gund Arena in downtown Cleveland this Saturday. This year's event has an added bonus: it will increase the level of competition by pitting the top basketball players in the country from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) against top players from colleges across the State of Ohio.

The all-star game will be part of a basketball quadruple header that will include a celebrity game hosted by actress/comedienne Kym Whitley (a Greater-Cleveland native).

Black College All-Star Game tickets will be available at all Ticketmaster locations or by calling the Gund Arena box office at (216) 241-5555 or (800) 332-2287. Information is also available at the event's web site www.blackcollegeallstargame.com.
