What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
COLLINS RETURNS TO VSU: Tony Collins, longtime assistant basketball coach at Austin
Peay State University, has resigned to become head coach at
his alma mater, Virginia State. He was introduced as the
Trojans new head coach last Wednesday afternoon at a
press conference in Petersburg. Collins is taking
over the Trojans program from John Hill, who was let
go after a 13-15 finish this season. Collins just
completed his 16th season as an APSU assistant, 15 of them
under head coach Dave Loos. When Loos was named head
coach in July 1990, he elected to retain Collins from the
previous coaching staff. Collins joined the Govs staff in 1989,
moving over from the Lady Govs program after serving one
season as an assistant. He has helped the Governors become one
of the Ohio Valley Conference's most consistently
successful programs that has seen 12 straight .500 or better
OVC seasons, including three conference championships and
a pair of NCAA tourney appearances. Collins came to
APSU in 1988-89, joining former associate Jim Phillips as
women's assistant. The two became acquainted at Virginia State,
when Phillips served as women's head coach and Collins played
for the men's team. Collins, a 1979 Virginia State graduate,
later served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater and
later followed Phillips to Friends University in Wichita,
Kan., serving as assistant men's coach in 1980. He remained
in Wichita in 1981, working toward his master's degree
at Wichita State, before returning to coaching in 1982.
Collins spent two seasons as women's assistant coach at
Miami (Ohio) University. After a stint in private business, he
coached LaPlata's High School girls' basketball team to the
1987 Maryland state championship before moving to
Fayetteville State as an assistant men's coach and Boys Club
program director.
NEW GRID COACH AT CAU: Clark Atlanta
University has announced the selection of
Ted Bahhur as the new head football coach of Panthers.
Prior to taking the position at CAU, Bahhur served for two
years as an offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for
the Tuskegee Golden Tigers. Before going to Tuskegee,
he had a twelve-year coaching tenure including stops at
Kent State, Baker University, Baldwin, Clark Atlanta
and Georgia State. He coached running backs during his stints at Baker and Clark
Atlanta. While building a new football program in 2002 at
Georgia State University, Bahhur served as head coach and
amassed a 5-2 winning record. He earned his bachelor's degree
in Criminal Justice from Kent State in 1992.
MOREHOUSE GETS ITS MAN:
Morehouse has selected Terry
Beauford as its head football coach. The former
offensive line coach from Hampton will begin his first head
coaching job after spending five years under the tutelage
of head coach Joe Taylor. In addition to his duties with
the offensive line, the Ft. Pierce, Fla., native and
Florida A&M alum also served as
co-special teams coordinator and strength coordinator. He takes over
a program that finished 4-6 last season under
Williard Scissum.
