Hill out at Virginia State
According to a story in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Virginia State has fired head men's basketball coach John Hill after two-and-a half seasons. He is expected to be reassigned within the athletic department.

Hill, a former Winston-Salem State men's assistant and former head women's coach at St. Paul's, compiled a 34-42 record at VSU after taking over from Robert Booker midway through the 20022-03 season.

The Trojans finished 13-15 this season, ending their year with a loss to N.C. Central in the first round of the CIAA Tournament.

Howard dismisses Allen
Howard dismissed head men's basketball coach Frankie Allen on Tuesday after his Bison finished the season at Monday's MEAC Tournament with a first round loss 80-56 loss to Florida A&M.

The Bison finished the 2004-05 season on a 17-game losing streak and with an overall 5-23 mark including a 2-16 MEAC record. Allen compiled a 52-83 record in five years as Howard's coach.

Allen, a former head coach at Virginia Tech and Tennessee State, led Howard to a 10-18 record his first season -- the most wins by the program in a decade. Before Allen's arrival, the Bison had won a total of three games in the previous two seasons. In 2001-02, the Bison went 18-13 and finished third in the MEAC, their best record in 10 years. Howard advanced to the MEAC tournament title game, making its first championship appearance since 1992. The Bison have not won a regular season or tournament title the past 13 years.

Brown resigns at Morgan State; Beasley to take over
Morgan State head women's basketball coach Angelyne Brown announced her resignation last Tuesday, according to Interim Athletic Director Tanya Rush. Brown, who just completed her third season with the Bears, finished with a career record of 8-76 at Morgan State.

Brown finished the 2004-2005 season with a 4-23 overall record while posting a 2-16 record in the MEAC.

Rush said the University will name Donald Beasley as the new head women's basketball coach effective March 14. Beasley will be accepting his first Div. I head coaching position.He is currently an assistant men's coach at Division II Fayetteville State. He will become MSU's seventh women's coach since 1982.

Coates to the NFL
Former NFL all-pro tight end Ben Coates apparently will not be the new coach at his alma mater, Livingstone, choosing instead to join the staff of new Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel as tight ends coach.

Coates went to five straight Pro Bowls with New England from 1994-to-98 and won a Super Bowl title with Baltimore in 2000. He ended his career as the fourth all-time leading receiver at tight end behind Ozzie Newsome, Shannon Sharpe and Kellen Winslow. Coates played in 158 games with 499 receptions for more than 55-hundred yards and 50 touchdowns.

Following his playing career, Coates coached at Livingstone, his alma mater, where he was expected to replace George Johnson, who was fired at the end of the 2004 season, and in N-F-L Europe.

NFL PR Assistant passes
William Bryant
, assistant director of media relations for the Tennessee Titans was found dead in his hotel room in Tunica, MS on Saturday. He was serving as a judge for a public relations awards program. An autopsy is anticipated to determine the exact cause of death.

The Florida A&M and Howard alum was with the Titans for five years and served previously as a PR assistant with the St. Louis Rams and did an internship with the Denver Broncos. He also served as an assistant SID at Howard from 1996-98.
