St. Augustine's again in CIAA Indoor Track
St. Augustine's men captured their eighth straight CIAA Indoor Track & Field championship while the Lady Falcons won their ninth straight at competition held at Christopher Newport University's Freeman Center in Newport News, Va., Saturday.

The men racked up 167 points to easily outdistance Virginia State (54) and N. C. Central (59).

The Lady Falcons scored 167 points to get by Bowie State (78) and N. C. Central (47).

The men's shot put and high jump were the highlight of the day, with repeat first place performances from Patrick Wright of Livingstone and Robert Duval of Bowie State. Wright threw the shot for 14.64m, to win for the fourth time in his career. Duval also repeated his title for the 3rd time with a 7-foot clearance.

Yosmila Pinerez and Doris Thompson of St. Aug's College dominated the women's long jump, triple jump and shot put. Pinerez placed first in the long jump with a leap of 5.51m and 11.73m in the triple jump. Thompson led the shot put with a throw of 13.67m. NCCU's women's distance medley team led by 13 seconds with a 13.01.42 finish.

Jackson State's White suspended
The Southwestern Athletic Conference notified Jackson State athletic officials last week that point guard Charles White of the men's basketball must serve a three-game suspension for his physical altercation against an opposing player in the Feb. 7 basketball game at Southern.

White, a highly recruited freshman and former Mississippi state high school player of the year, was averaging 8.8 points and 3.6 assists for the Tigers.

The three-game suspension will include the NCAA mandated one-game suspension and disqualified White for JSU's games on Saturday, Monday and this coming Saturday (2/19). JSU officials can file an appeal within ten (10) days. That appeal can only involve the SWAC suspension (two games) and not the NCAA mandated one game. If an appeal is filed, it will be reviewed by the SWAC Appeals Committee.

SWAC Commissioner Robert Vowels issues this official statement: "As we have stressed in the past, the SWAC Office encourages sporting behavior and adherence to the conference's Sportsmanlike Conduct Policy. We will continue to enforce the policies to ensure that everyone in our athletics programs act in a manner that brings credit to our member institutions, themselves, intercollegiate athletics and the conference."

WSSU grants Stitt an extension
Winston-Salem State announced Monday that it was giving Head Men's Basketball Coach Phillip Stitt a three-year contract extension.

Stitt, in his seventh season with the Rams program, took over as head coach after Rick Duckett's departure prior to the 2001-02 season. He has compiled a 71-38 record including an 18-5 mark this season which includes wins over CIAA favorites and nationally-ranked Virginia Union and Bowie State. The contract extension will take effect on April 1 and will continue through the completion of the 2007-08 season.
