What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports

ALL-STAR STANDOUTS: Black college senior standouts are making their presence felt in postseason college football all-star games and making plays that they hope will open eyes of professional scouts to their abilities.

Speedy Hampton wide receiver/kick returner Jerome Mathis showcased his sprinter's speed at The Village's Gridiron Classic in Florida scoring on a 26-yard reception and a 38-yard flanker reverse Saturday before a national television audience on ESPN. Mathis, whose North squad lost 24-21 to the South, finished with two receptions for 59 yards and two carries for 49 yards, totalling 108 yards of total offense. He also had a 35-yard kickoff return. Tuskegee defensive end Jordan Brumbaugh had six solo tackles for the South, two for losses including one sack. Hampton DB Diruul Diaab also played for the North while Bethune-Cookman DB Nick Collins was on the South team.

Fayetteville State defensive back Walter Williams was one of six black college NCAA Div. II stars that shined for the victorious East squad in the Jan. 7 Whataburger Cactus Bowl in Kingsville, Tx. Williams was named his team's defensive MVP after chalking up one tackle, two interceptions and one pass break-up in their 18-15 come-from-behind win over the West. Tuskegee wide receiver Harry Williams proved to be the hero as he hauled in a 30-yard touchdown reception with 5:50 left in the game for the final margin. Williams led East receivers with five receptions for 63 yards. Fort Valley State running back Derrick Wimbush ran for only eight yards on four carries and had one reception for -7 yards. Albany State defensive end Walter Curry had one sack for minus-5 yards among two tackles and two assists. Livingstone linebacker Moises Gordon also had two solo tackles and two assists. Albany State center Rodney Magwood was also on the East squad.
