Hoop Notes
- For the third week in a row, Dave
Robbins' undefeated Virginia Union Panthers (6-0), sit atop the NABC NCAA Men's Div. II poll and will begin the
new year as the No. 1 team in the BCSP Top Ten (see below).
The Panthers, champions last year of the
CIAA, return five starters and got back all-conference swingman
Duan Crockett who sat out last season with
academic troubles. They currently have five players scoring in double figures led by
small forward Darius Hargrove's 17.8 points per game.
Bowie State is also undefeated at 7-0, has moved up to fifth in the latest Div.
II poll and is No. 2 in the BCSP Top Ten. The Bulldogs are led by center
Letheal Cook, who is averaging 20.8 points and 13.6 rebounds, both tops in the CIAA.
- Howard 5-5 junior point guard Louis Ford
currently leads NCAA Div. I ballers averaging 4.4 steals per contest. Ford had a triple-double on the road
against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 6, scoring 11 points, handed out 14 assists
and getting ten steals.
- Norfolk State head coach Dwight Freeman
announced that a temporary medical condition will prevent him from travelling with the team. Assistant
head coach Rodney Martin will serve as head coach until Freeman is cleared by
doctors to travel. Freeman says he will continue to supervise practices and will be on
the bench for home games.
- McDonald's has signed on as title sponsor of the Jan. 15
Jim Richardson Legacy Basketball Classic tripleheader in
Charlotte.
