BCSP Notes . . .Walter Camp All-Americans Tennessee State running back Charles Anthony was named to the offensive team while Norfolk State linebacker Kevin Talley and Southern defensive back Ahmad Treaudo were named to the defensive squad. Hampton wide receiver/kick returner Jerome Mathis was selected as the kick returner. All four are seniors. Anthony, the Ohio Valley Conference offensive player of the year, led the nation in rushing average getting 158.1 yards per game, finishing the season with 1,739 yards and 14 TDs. He added 318 receiving yards to finish third in the nation in all-purpose yards. Talley, who led the nation in total tackles with 135, is the first Spartan ever to be so honored by The Walter Camp Football Foundation, which only picks one All-American team (first-team offense, first-team defense). He is also the first NSU football player to receive a first-team All-American honor since receiver James Roe and quarterback Aaron Sparrow each earned multiple first-team honors in 1995. This is Talley's second consecutive year as tackles leader. Treaudo started the season for Southern as a back-up but went on to lead the nation in interceptions with nine and make first team all-SWAC. His is the highest interception total for a Jaguar since NFL veteran Aeneas Williams picked off 11 in 1991. Mathis, an NCAA all-American sprinter in track, led the nation averaging 35.5 yards per kick return. He returned five kickoffs for touchdowns.
Wimbush second for D-2 award Colorado School of Mines quarterback Chad Friehauf was named the winner Saturday receiving 194 total points in the voting including 45 first-place votes. Wimbush finished second with 88 points and 11 first-place votes, Wimbush, a senior from Mauk, Ga., who has been selected to play in the 59th Hula Bowl All-Star Game in Maui, Hawaii in January, was third in the nation in rushing with a 167.3-yard average and fifth in scoring with 12.2 points per game. He rushed for 1,840 yards on 247 carries and averaged 7.4 yards per carry while scoring 22 TDs. He led the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in rushing, scoring and all-purpose yards.
