MEAC names grid all-stars
Morgan State QB Bradshaw Littlejohn and Hampton LB Justin Durant were the chief individual award winners as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Con-ference announced their 2004 football all-conference team selected by the league's coaches and sports information directors.

Littlejohn, the 6-3, 258-pound signal-caller for the Bears, led the MEAC in passing yardage averaging 240.3 yards per game, in total offense (310.3 ypg.), passing touchdowns (18) and rushing touchdowns (18). Littlejohn finished with 770 rushing yards and 2,643 passing yards while leading the Bears to a 5-6 overall finish, tied for fifth in the MEAC at 3-4.

Durant, who led eight members of the championship Pirates' squad named to the first team, finished fourth in the MEAC in total tackles (94) and tackles for loss (12) while grabbing three interceptions, two of which he retuned for touchdowns. Five more Pirates were named to the second team.

The league's other top awards went to Delaware State freshman wide receiver Shaheer McBride, Hampton offensive lineman Jelani Clement and Hampton head coach Joe Taylor. McBride took home the Rookie of the Year award after hauling in 46 passes for 849 yards and seven TDs. Clement became the third straight Pirate to take the top lineman award while Taylor, who won his second MEAC title, was named the league's top coach.

QBs lead SWAC grid honors
Quarterbacks took home three of the top four individual awards as the Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2004 all-conference football team last week. Southern QB Thomas Ricks became the second straight Jaguar QB to take home the offensive player of the year award while Mississippi Valley State QB Aries Nelson and Grambling State QB Brandon Landers were named Newcomer and Freshman of the Year. Alabama State linebacker Ronald "Rock" Dillon was chosen as the league's defensive player of the year.

Ricks, who follows former Southern QB Quincy Richard in winning the offensive award, led the 8-3 Jaguars to the SWAC West Division title while pacing the conference in total offense at 273.7 yards per game. Ricks threw for 2,406 yards and 21 TDs and rushed for another seven scores. Nelson, a junior transfer from Mississippi State, passed and ran for 212.3 yards per game, fourth best in the SWAC. Landers took over after preseason SWAC Player of the Year Bruce Eugene was hurt in the Tigers' first game and led the G-Men to a 6-5 finish. Landers finished fifth in total offense while throwing 18 TD passes.

Dillion a 5-11, 217 Sr., from Memphis led a Hornets' defense that led the conference in rushing defense. 11 carries), was held to just 128 yards on 43 carries.

All SWAC schools has representation on the 2004 team with Alabama State, the SWAC East division champion, leading with ten players (six on seconnd team). Alcorn State had eight players selected (three on second team).
