Fort Valley State running back Derrick
Wimbush took home the league's most valuable player award
but Albany State and Tuskegee dominated selections on
the 2004 All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference football team.
Undefeated league champion Albany State
placed five players on the first team led by defensive
end Walter Curry picked as the conference's
defensive player of the year. ASU head coach James
"Mike" White won coach of the year. Runner-up
Tuskegee placed eight players on the first team led by QB
Kevin Huff. Albany State had another eight players
selected to the second team while Tuskegee added two.
Wimbush ran away with the conference
rushing title totalling 1,840 yards, the best total in all of
black college football, averaging 167.3 yards per
game, more than 80 yards per game over Miles' Taurus
Carr (830 yards, 83 ypg.), who was also named to the first
team. Wimbush also led the SIAC in all-purpose yards and
scoring (22 TDs, 132 points).
Curry, a defensive end, grabbed his second
straight defensive player award after totalling 56 tackles with
8.5 sacks. FVSU freshman QB Willis Copeland
was named the top freshman.
