What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
North Carolina A&T Chancellor
James C. Renick announced in press release Friday that Athletic
Director Charles Davis had been relieved of his duties. "It is time for
the N.C. A&T Athletics Department to move toward new directions in
keeping with the university's overall vision, mission and
goals," Renick said in the release. Reginald
Wade, assistant vice chancellor for business
services, will be the interim athletics director for the next few months,
according to the release which also indicated that
Lenora Bryant, Renick's assistant, will conduct
a national search for the new AD. Davis, 55, a 1971
ACC basketball player of the year at Wake Forest and member
of the 50th anniversary all-ACC team, was formerly
athletic director at Bowie State. He was hired in October 2002
at A&T after two years at Bowie State. Prior to going to
Bowie State, Davis had served in several positions in Wake
Forest athletics. He replaced Dr. Alfonso Scandrett
at A&T, who was dismissed in June, 2002 after three years as the
Aggies' AD.
JOHNSON OUT AT LC: Livingstone College Head Football
Coach George Johnson submitted his letter of resignation on Friday
after three years at the helm. Johnson, a former defensive coordinator
at Tuskegee, completed final business with the team and the
athletic department before his departure. The Blue Bears produced a
disappointing 2-8 season in 2004 winning just one CIAA West
Division contest. Johnson compiled consecutive 3-7 seasons in his
first two years. Prior to Johnson's resignation, the contracts of the offensive coordinator
(Moses Rison) and defensive coordinator
(Roderick Randolph) were not renewed. The search to fill all vacant positions
will begin immediately.
