BCSP Notes . . .

Fayetteville State comes up short
CIAA runner-up Fayetteville State battled Carson-Newman on near even terms for one half but could not sustain the effort in the second half as the Eagles moved out to a 35-14 victory in a first round NCAA Div. II playoff game in Jefferson City, Tn.

The Broncos (8-4) did all their scoring in the second quarter, getting a 52-yard flea-flicker from QB Jonathan Autry to WR Darryl Bright to tie the game at 7 at the 14:37 mark. After giving up another CNU score, FSU tied the score at 14 on a two-yard run from RB Elliot London that capped a 10-play, 65-yard drive.

CNU took the lead for good as they scored a touchdown 43 seconds before the half to go up 21-14.

The Eagles then began a dominant second half by taking the kickoff and consuming 7:13 on a 15-play, 84-yard drive that put them up 28-14 and seemingly took the life out of the Broncos. Their final scoring drive would cover 50 yards and come with 6:56 left. They advance to the second round where they will face #2 seed Valdosta State.

FSU would have only three second half possessions and totalled only 35 yards of total offense in the second half, 168 total yards for the game.

London ended the game with 104 rushing yards for the Broncos and Autry was 4-for-10 for 68 yards through the air. Linebacker Charles Roberts had a monster game defensively for the Broncos with 18 tackles, 13 of which were solos.

Harkness axed at JC Smith?
Reports out of Charlotte, N.C. indicate that Johnson C. Smith has terminated its entire football coaching staff including head coach Tim Harkness.

As leader of the Golden Bulls grid fortunes, Harkness compiled an 11-50 record in seven seasons including an 0-10 mark this season. The Golden Bulls finished 1-9 in 2003.
