­ Hampton 40, Western Illinois 20
Hampton (3-0, 1-0 MEAC) surrendered a field goal early then ripped off 33 straight points to get a big win over the 16th-ranked (I-AA) Leathernecks. The Pirates got four turnovers and got production from their offense, led by speedy wide receiver/kick returner Jerome Mathis, their defense and special teams.. Mathis scored both as a kick returner and receiver, bringing back a kickoff 99 yards for one score and then hauling in a 60-yard pass from Princeton Shepherd for a second TD. RB Alonzo Coleman added 88 rushing yards and 2 TDs while the Pirates' defense set up scores with an interception by Calvin Bannister and a Dirul Diaab fumble recovery. It was Hampton coach Joe Taylor's first win over his alma mater.


­ Howard 17, #3 Alcorn State 10
Howard (1-2, 0-1 MEAC) knocked Alcorn State (2-1, 1-0 SWAC E) from the unbeaten ranks and got its first win of the season despite not completing a pass in the Prince George's Classic at Fed Ex Field outside Washington, DC. Bison QB Marcus Moreno was 0 for 7 for 0 passing yards but the Bison gained 190 yards rushing, got field goals of 39, 40 and 33 yards from freshman placekicker and game MVP Justin Brantley, and scored on an 80-yard Michael Brown fumble return in downing the Braves. The tough Howard defense shut out the Braves in the first half and limited Alcorn senior QB Donald Carrie to just 14 completions in 37 attempts, allowing only a 9-yard scoring toss to John Washington to open third quarter scoring. David McConnell's 37-yard field goal was the only other scoring.

­ NC Central 31, Bowie State 28
The NC Central Eagles (3-1, 1-0 CIAA W) capped a 10-play, 56-yard drive with a 25-yard field goal from Brandon Gilbert with 1:48 left to knock off Bowie State (2-2, 1-1 CIAA E). NCCU QB Adrian Warren passed for 236 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Eagles who fought back from a 21-7 third quarter deficit to pull out the win. NCCU began its comeback after Luis George ran 50 yards to paydirt on a fake punt. The Eagles took the lead on two fourth-quarter TD passes from Warren, one to Toryeon Hester for 29-yards and a 20-yard strike to Torey Ross to go up 28-21 with 9:37 left. Bowie tied the score when QB Jabali Smith found Dwayne Payne in the end zone for an 8-yard score with just 5:34 left in the game. Smith finished 12 for 25 for 169 yards and three TDs.

­ Grambling State 24, Bethune-Cookman 23
The G-Men (1-2, 0-2 SWAC W) registered their first and new head coach Melvin Spears' first win as Brian Morgan nailed a 36-yard field goal with nine seconds left to down the Wildcats (1-1, 0-0 MEAC).An Ohio Classic crowd of 35,608 at Cincinnati's Paul Brown Stadium watched Grambling fight back from a 13-0 halftime deficit behind the play of freshman QB Brandon Landers (15-31, 231 yds.) who had two second half scoring tosses, one in the third quarter to Henry Tolbert covering 29 yards and another with 4.55 left to C. Edwards covering 46 yards that pulled the Tigers to within 23-21. B-CC got a 17-yard scoring run from Eric Weems to open the scoring and Weems later scored on a 36-yard fourth quarter pass from QB Jonathan Rucker (9-12-0, 161 yds.) to put the Tigers up 23-14.

­ St. Augustine's 34, Shaw 6
The battle of Raleigh, NC went to the St. Augustine's Falcons (2-2, 1-0 CIAA W) who took advantage of seven turnovers to down Shaw (3-1, 1-1 CIAA E). SAC QB Matthew Perry, playing for the injured Darrell Nesbitt, threw three TD passes while Eddie Montgomery rushed for a 23-yard touchdown and caught a 68-yard score. Shaw scored first on QB Darion Mack's two-yard run in the first quarter but did not reach paydirt again. The Falcons converted Mack's fumble into Montgomery's scoring run then blocked a punt that Fritz Charles returned 26 yards for a score. For the day, the Falcon defense sacked Mack three times, forced three fumbles and had three interceptions.

­ Tennessee State 21, Jackson State 20
TSU (3-0, 1-0 OVC) remained unbeaten and kept JSU winless (0-3, 0-0 SWAC E) when RB Charles Anthony hauled in a six-yard scoring pass from Riley Walker with 8 seconds left to complete a comeback win. Anthony rushed for 171 yards and scored TSU's first TD on a 15-yard fourth quarter run. TSU scored all of its points in the final period. JSU's Cletis Gordon scored on a 73-yard punt return and a 89-yard kickoff return.
