HOW THEY DID IT: Game Recaps

Albany State 24, Valdosta State 22
SIAC champion Albany State (2-0, 1-0 SIAC) got its first win in 10 tries vs. national power Valdosta State when PK Adrian Adango drilled a 35-yard field goal with 1:23 to play. ASU controlled the ball for ten minutes more than VSU getting 123 yards on 22 carries and two TDs from RB Antonio Atkins and 66 rushing yards and 162 passing yards from QB Uyl Joyner. ASU had five sacks while Joyner was not sacked in the game. Valdosta State was ranked as high as No. 3 in NCAA Div. II football.

Alcorn State 34, Grambling State 23
QB Donald Carrie threw for 276 yards and 2 TDs (17-27-1), RB Robert Lester ran for 106 yards and 2 TDs and DB Taurian Parks returned an interception 97 yards for a score as the Braves (1-0, 1-0 SWAC E) knocked off GSU (0-1, 0-1 SWAC W). The Braves put Grambling all-American QB Bruce Eugene out of the game in the third quarter with a knee injury while leading 24-3.

Prairie View 25, Texas Southern 7
New head coach Henry Frazier got a win in his first game as the Panthers (1-0, 1-0 SWAC W) shocked TSU (0-1, 0-1 SWAC W) for their first season-opening season win since 1988. Before 30,349 at Reliant Stadium senior QB Michael Hill threw three TD passes and PV took advantage of breakdowns in the TSU kicking game to score 18 of its points. Prairie View scored safeties following two bad snaps from punt formation, had a TD set up by another bad snap and returned a punt 57 yards to set up another score.

N. C. A&T 16, N. C. Central 15
NC A&T (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) got a 50-yard field goal from Carlos Davalos, his first successful kick as an Aggie, with no time left on the clock to defeat the Eagles before 27,852 in Raleigh, N.C. NCCU had the ball with 1:18 left with a chance to run out the clock but QB Adrian Warren mishandled a snap from center that A&T recovered setting up the winning drive. A&T did not lead in the game until the final horn. NCCU's Greg Pruitt rushed for 110 yards and a TD in the loss.
