>- Albany State 17, Miles 13
SIAC champion Albany State (1-0, 1-0 SIAC) beat back a tough challenge from Miles (0-1, 0-1 SIAC) to get a win in the first game at the new Albany Municipal Coliseum Saturday night. A sellout crowd of 11,273 saw the home team overcome a 13-10 halftime lead when Dontreal Williams (12 car., 32 yds., 2 TDs) got his second scoring run of the day late in the third quarter. ASU RB Antonio Atkins ran for 87 yards on 14 carries while QB Uyl Joyner ran for 79 yards while completing 13 of 22 passes for 133 yards. Miles senior QB Nicholas Smith, after being cleared to play late in the week, came off the bench in the second quarter to spark the Bears to two scores. Smith threw 70- and 10-yard scoring passes and finished with seven completions in 19 attempts for 153 yards and 2 TDs, but also had two interceptions, the final one in the Albany State end zone with less than two minutes to play. Smith also ran for 66 yards.

RBs Julius Jordon (26 car., 143 yds., 2 TDs) and Isaac Redmond (12 car., 107 yds., 1 TD) both topped 100-yards rushing to lead Bowie State (1-0) to a shutout win over West Virginia State (0-1)in the opener for both schools.

NCCU (1-0, 1-0 CIAA W) rushed for 297 yards, scored three times on interception returns and kept Johnson C. Smith (0-1, 0-1 CIAA W) out of the end zone in the season opener for both CIAA West Division teams in Durham, NC. NCCU RB Greg Pruitt topped the charts rushing for 138 yards on 13 carries. QB Adrian Warren hit on 11 of 22 passes for 107 yards and two TDs.
>- Lane 24, Virginia Union 12
Defending CIAA E. Div. champ Virginia Union (0-1, 0-0 CIAA E) lost five fumbles and threw three interceptions and was held to just 100 yards in dropping a decision to Lane (1-0, 0-0 SIAC). Lane QB Kenneth Irby ran for two scores (3,1) and completed six of 13 passes for 102 yards including a 72-yard scoring toss to Jacoby Jones to highlight the Dragons' attack. VUU reserve QB Cordell Jones hit on only one of seve passes and had three picked off.
>- Kentucky State 37, Clark Atlanta 9
Cassius Chambers rushed for 119 yards and QB Joe McBride (13-23-0, 175 yds.) threw for two scores as the KSU Thorobreds (1-0, 1-0 SIAC) handled Clark Atlanta (0-1, 0-1 SIAC). Back-up QB Shawn Johnson hit on 8 of 12 passes for 71 yards and one TD. The Breds picked off three of CAU QB Adrian Johnson's (5-16-3, 41 yds.) passes.
>- Fort Valley State 57, Morehouse 12
FVSU RB Derrick Wimbush rushed for 205 yards (20 car.) and 2 TDs to lead the Wildcats rout of Morehouse. The 'Cats held 1,000-yard rusherJohn David Washington to 21 yards on seven carries and held MHC to only 87 yards on 22 carries while piling up 365 rushing yards (46 att.) themselves and getting five rushing touchdowns.Rashod Moultin returned a Morehouse punt 73 yards to paydirt early in the second quarter.
>- Carson-Newman 48, Winston-Salem State 32
In the Thursday night opener, CN scored on seven straight possessions racking up 559 yards on total offense, and placing three rushers over 100 yards in handling WSSU (0-1, 0-0 CIAA W). Jed Bines led the Rams with 167 yards rushing on 19 carries. Martin Hicks added 105 rushing yards on 19 carries.
>- Catawba 49, Fayetteville State 21
FSU (0-1, 0-0 CIAA W) could not overcome surrendering 305 passing yards and three TDs (73, 57 and 15) to Catawba QB Luther Samples and 509 total yards in the road loss. FSU QB Kyle Reming threw for three scores (3, 3 and 15 yards) while completing 20 of 33 passes for 153 yards.
