St. Aug's, Va. State take CIAA awards

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) presented Virginia State University with the Loretta Taylor Women's All-Sports Trophy and Saint Augustine's College with the C.H. Williams Men's All-Sports Trophy at the Annual Award's luncheon Thursday in Raleigh.

Virginia State won the Taylor award for women's sports excellence after conceding that title to Shaw last year. This is VSU's fourth time winning the award in five years. VSU won two championships this year, softball and bowling, while coming in second in three sports, cross country, indoor track and field and tennis.

St Aug's dominated in men's championship titles this year with top finishes in cross country, outdoor and indoor track and field. SAC's three championships, along with exceptional finishes in football and men's basketball, placed them in position for recognition.

The Taylor and Williams trophies are determined by a point system established to award an institution for achievement in each of their women's and men's programs. The champion is the institution with the most combined total points for all sponsored sports based on their conference finish and the number of CIAA sponsored events.

Chris Zona, sports information director at Winston-Salem State University was awarded the John Holley Sports Information Director Award. Zona's achievement in broadening WSSU's archival database has given the Rams' athletic department an edge in providing reporters excellent records on WSSU history. Chris has also been instrumental in expanding the Rams' athletic website.

Michael Bailey of Virginia Union University and Tonia Walker of WSSU have been named Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator of the Year. Both individuals have made concentrated efforts to maximize the potential of their men's and women's programs, while maintaining equality between both programs.

This year's Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Award has been presented to Al Carter, Director of Athletics at Shaw University for providing extraordinary leadership for the Bears' Athletic Department.
