Southern sweeps SWAC awardsSouthern University athletic programs captured the 2003-04 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) All-Sports Championships in both the Men's and Women's Divisions and retained their hold on the Dr. James Frank Commissioners Cup Award. Alabama State finished second in both men and women's divisions and also finished second in the Commissioner's Cup race. The Jaguars' women's programs captured five (bowling, golf, indoor track, outdoor track and tennis) of ten SWAC championships for a total of 93 points to capture the Barbara Jacket / Sadie Magee Award for the women's All-Sports Championship. Alabama State and Alcorn State tied for second with 73.5 points each. The Jaguars have won six consecutive Jacket/Magee Awards. The Commissioner's Cup, the newly named, Dr. James Frank Award, is awarded to the school with the best combined total of the all-sports awards. Southern tallied 164.5 points, followed by Alabama State with 138.5 points. Southern has won four of the last five and five of the last seven Commissioner's Cup Awards. The awards were presented to Southern University athletic director, Floyd Kerr, and Senior Woman Administrator, DeBorah Paul, at the SWAC Spring meetings at the Beau Rivage Hotel in Biloxi, Mississippi this week.
