FINAL BCSP WOMEN'S TOP TEN

  1. SHAW (28-3) - The Lady Bears, perhaps with a more talented team than last year's that finished 31-3, repeated as CIAA champs but lost at home in first round of the NCAA tourney. Despite falling short of expectations, the Lady Bears repeat as the top team.

2. HAMPTON (17-13) - Tied for first in regular season, beat Delaware State to repeat as MEAC Tourney champs. Lost to top-seed Penn State in NCAA East Regional.

3. SOUTHERN (17-13) - Seeded third in SWAC tourney, halted Miss. Valley State's run to get second tournament title in three years. Lost to top-seed Texas in NCAA West Regional.

4. DELAWARE STATE (21-9) - Tied for first in regular season, steamrolled by Hampton in MEAC Tournament finals.

5. ALABAMA STATE(19-9) - Top seed in SWAC Tournament clipped in first round of tournament by upstart Miss. Valley State.

6. JACKSON STATE(23-7) - Tied for first in regular season knocked off by Southern in SWAC Tourney semifinals.

7. VIRGINIA UNION (24-7) - Pantherettes couldn't beat Shaw in three tries in the CIAA but advanced farther in the NCAA tournament (regioinal semifinals).

8. BENEDICT(16-14) - Squeaked by Tuskegee in SIAC Tournament final after sixth place regular season finish. Fell in Div. II South Region first round.

9. FORT VALLEY (24-7) - Regular season SIAC champ felled by Tuskegee in tournament semifinals. Lost in South Region first round.

10. WEST VIRGINIA STATE (22-9) - Finished third in WVIAC but made Div. II East Region field losing in first round.

(TIE) TUSKEGEE (20-10) - Fought its way into SIAC Tournament finals knocking off Fort Valley State in semifinals. Lost 56-55 to Benedict in the final game.
