BCSP Notes . . .A&T Student/Athlete Felled According to reports from the Johnston
County Sheriff's Department North Carolina
A&T football player, Herbert Dixon,
III, was fatally shot Saturday night outside a Benson, N.C., night club.
Dixon, a 20-year-old sophomore, was one of three people shot at the D&L Night Club at 2:30 a.m. Dixon was the only fatality. The suspect is still at-large as the investigation continues. Dixon returned to his home of Clinton, NC, during the N.C. A&T spring break. He was an outstanding inside linebacker on the University's championship football team leading the team in tackles. A&T head football coach George Small described Dixon as an excellent athlete who worked hard to win. Small said,"as we grieve and pray with the Dixon Family, we need to ask for wisdom to understand the bigger plan for all our lives." A&T Chancellor, Dr. James C. Renick said, "the entire Aggie Family sends encouragement to the Dixon Family during their hour of need. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with them." Funeral arrangements are set for Saturday in his hometown of Clinton. University arrangements for a campus/community memorial service are incomplete at this time. Vice Chancellor Roselle Wilson said A&T's counseling services are available for athletes, students, faculty and staff.
Campbell resigns at SCSU
Campbell leaves SCSU after a seven-year tenure, in which she compiled a 71-123 record, including a 9-19 mark for the 2003-04 campaign. In announcing the resignation, interim athletics director Charlene Johnson said "The University would like to thank Coach Campbell for her contributions to the women's basketball program and we wish her the best in her future endeavors." Campbell, a 1991 SCSU graduate and former All-MEAC performer for the Lady Bulldogs as a player, began her coaching tenure at SCSU during the 1997-98 season when she replaced Germaine McAuley. She was named MEAC Coach of the Year in 2000-01 after leading the Lady Bulldogs to an 18-11 mark and a second place finish in the MEAC during the regular season. Johnson said a search for a successor would begin immediately, and that assistant coach Tonya Mackey would be in charge of the team until further notice.
Gillum out at Livingstone
Prior to Gillum's appointment as head coach, he served two years as an assistant coach at Livingstone. Before arriving in Salisbury, he was the head coach at Dillard University for two years where he coached the men's team to a 33-13 record. At Livingstone, he compiled a two-year mark of 10-45 and won this year's CIAA Team Academic Award. The school said a search committee will be formed to fill the vacancy. © 2004 Azeez Communications, Inc. |
