NO BVQ: Black Voices Quarterly
Magazine is now officially out of business after it was announced last
week that BlackVoices.com, the companion website to the
publication, was acquired by America Online, the nation's largest internet
service provider (ISP). BlackVoices.com was owned by the
Chicago-based Tribune Co., who announced the acquisition last week in an
internal memo. According to Target Market
News, Tribune Senior Vice President David Hiller said in
the memo, "For the last several months we have been looking at
strategic alternatives that would provide BlackVoices greater
scale and reach within the African-American community.
AOL has acquired some of the assets of BlackVoices from us
and over the next six months, AOL will evaluate the
integration of BlackVoices with its own services focused on the
African-American community." TMN also reported that BVQ
and the newspaper supplement, Soulful Journeys, were not
being acquired by AOL and that BlackVoices founder
Barry Cooper was in negotiations with Tribune to acquire
the titles. Meantime, there will be no Winter issue of
BVQ. Efforts to reach either Cooper or BVQ Publisher,
Brett Moore, were unsuccessful.
