HOW THEY DID IT - Game RecapsAlcorn State (3-5, 2-2 SWAC E), the last team to beat Southern in 2002, knocked the Jaguars (7-1, 4-1 SWAC W) from the unbeaten ranks in 2003 as QB Donald Carrie (23-40) threw for 379 yards and a career-high four TDs to keep the Braves in the SWAC East race. Carrie's last scoring toss, 24 yards to Charlie Spillers with 40 seconds left, was the game-winner. Carrie avoided a sack to get the pass away. The Braves rolled up 506 total yards against Southern who led the nation in passing efficiency and was giving up only 12.1 points per game. The Panthers of Virginia Union (5-3, 4-1 CIAA E) scored 17 unanswered points to begin the second half to move out from a 13-10 halftime lead and knock off VSU (4-4, 2-3 CIAA E) to set up a showdown with Bowie State (6-2, 5-0 CIAA E) this week for the CIAA East Division lead. Freshman QB John Cates (17-27, 185 yds., no ints.), who has been marvelous in the Panthers' four game winning streak, was again the catalyst, throwing for one TD and running for another in the win. VSU QB Kevin Jones (14-28) threw for 221 yards but had two picks. QB Joe McBride was 13-for-20 for 218 yards and five scores Saturday as the Thorobreds (6-2, 5-0) stayed unbeaten in the SIAC. KSU RB Roni Robinson kept the Tigers (5-3, 3-2) off balance with 106 rushing yards on 20 carries. Howard (2-5, 0-3 MEAC) put up little resistance as the Aggies (7-1, 3-0 MEAC) rolled to a homecoming victory before a crowd of 26,685. Howard managed just 190 total yards and got a fluke 71-yard fourth quarter TD against the Aggie reserves. A&T ground out 201 rushing yards led by 94 yards and a TD from Frank Patterson. PK Yonnick Matthews had two field goals (24 and 35 yards) while Herbert Dixon opened the scoring with a 11-yard interception return. © 2003 Azeez Communications, Inc. |
