Southern 55, Alabama A&M 25
QB Quincy Richard's four first half TD passes staked the BCSP #1
Jaguars to a 34-5 halftime lead. But the A&M defense converted two third
quarter interceptions into scores to get within 34-19 and then stopped Southern
deep in A&M territory. But three plays later, Southern's
Erin Damond intercepted a Johnny Keith
pass and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown effectively putting the game away. Richard (25-40-3, 312 yds., 5 TDs)
later added his career-high fifth TD pass to Alfred
Ard. Ard (6 rec., 77 yds.) and Chris Davis
(6 rec., 75 yds.) both had two TD receptions. WR
Drayton Bridges had three receptions for 120 yards including a 33-yard TD
catch. Southern held SWAC rushing leader Jeremiah Bonds
to 22 yards on 14 carries.
Fayetteville State 22, Winston-Salem State 14
The FSU defense held the second-best rushing attack in the
CIAA to only 59 yards on 31 carries while
DeAngelo Bridgers rushed for 140 yards on
24 carries and the Broncos (4-2, 2-1) ran for 259 in the big CIAA W.
Div. matchup. FSU special teams players were instrumental in the win as
the Broncos got three field goals from Ross McKernan
(29, 24 and 32) and a 69-year punt return TD from WR/KR
Darryl Bright. QB Duane Taylor was 16-25 for 181 yards with no interceptions.
Amir Holding added 83 yards on 23 carries and scored the Broncos' first TD on a one-yard run.
Bethune-Cookman 27, Delaware State 13
Two B-CC turnovers staked DelState (0-6, 0-2) to a 13-0 early lead but
the Wildcats (5-1, 2-1) scored 27 unanswered points to pull out the win.
B-CC QB Allen Suber hit Eric Reed on a 12-yard TD strike early in the
second quarter to get the Wildcats on the board. RB
Rodney Johnson ran in from 34 yards,
Suber, who rushed for 149 yards, scored from 59 yards out,
and Brad Lee added a 43-yard score, all in the second half while the
B-CC defense shut down DSU.
Miles 30, Fort Valley State 13
Miles QB Nicholas Smith completed 12 of 16 passes for 170 yards and
three TDs (33, 3 and 17 yards) as the Golden Bears (4-2, 3-1) handed FVSU
(4-2, 3-1) its first SIAC loss of the season. Miles allowed the Wildcats to
score first and last and put up its 30 points between. The Bears held the
vaunted FVSU ground attack (292 ypg., best in the SIAC and black college
football) to just 91 yards in 41 carries.
Bowie State 14, Shaw 13
Bowie State (5-2, 4-0 E) extended its lead in the CIAA East Division
with another close win. QB Lamar Marigo's second TD of the day, an
11-yarder to Al-Jay Vernon with 5:17 left in the game gave the Bulldogs a win
over Shaw (4-2, 2-2 E).
N. C. A&T 28, Morgan State 21
MSU (2-4, 1-3) committed six turnovers allowing NC A&T (5-1, 2-0)
to escape Baltimore with a big MEAC win.
Alabama State 27, Jackson State 20
ASU (4-2, 2-1) scored on three long drives to build a 20-0 lead and then
held on to knock off JSU and claim the top spot in the SWAC E. Div. The
Hornets piled up 259 yards on the ground, led by 108 from RB
Robert Randolph, and got another 191 passing yards and a TD from QB
Tavarious Jackson. JSU QB Robert Kent
passed for 209 yards (17-32) and two TDs.
Freshman RB Antoine Rutherford rushed for 137 yards on 38 carries
and scored both touchdowns and the Bison (2-3, 0-1) got a 33-yard field
goal from Vaughn Waters with 2:30 left for the win.
