BCSP NFL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
for games of 10/5-6
 |
OFFENSE
JIMMY SMITH, 6-1, 213, WR, Jacksonville (13th year, JACKSON STATE) -
In his first game back from a four-game suspension for violating the league's
substance-abuse policy, Smith led the Jaguars with eight receptions for 137 yards in
a win over San Diego. His catches included a highlight-reel one-hander for 36
yards. "I was very grateful to go out there and do whatever I could to help the
team," Smith said. Of course, even when he's been on the shelf, it's no travesty to
get burned by Smith, the NFL's most prolific receiver over the last seven years.
"Any time you have Jimmy on your team, it's a respect thing," rookie quarterback
Byron Leftwich, who threw for 336 yards and two TDs, said. "You saw it in the second half. They
were putting two, three guys on him. That's when guys like
Matt Hatchette (Langston, 1 rec., 45 yards) and guys like Troy (Edwards) make big plays." It was a sparkling debut for Smith,
who looked like he hadn't missed any time, even though he spent the last six weeks in a rehab clinic.
"I went to him in the third quarter and told him I loved him," Taylor said. "He's been
going through a tough time. I feel like we're good enough friends that I can say that to him." |
