What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
NSU COACH MOURNED: The Norfolk State
University community last week mourned the loss of its head men's track
and field coach, Floyd Conley, who passed on Sat., Sept. 6, at
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital due to complications from a heart
attack. He was 58. Conley coached the Spartans since 1999.
During his time at NSU, the Spartans won one
MEAC indoor and one outdoor title, both of which
occurred in the 2000-01 school year. NSU also finished second in
the indoor meet in the 1999-2000 year, his first as the coach. Conley was also instrumental
in re-establishing the NSU Relays. Conley was one of the
first coaches hired by current NSU Athletics Director
Orby Moss. "Coach Conley was a positive person, the kind
of person you enjoy having on your staff. He had the ability
to respond in a positive manner to everything that came
his way," Moss said. "Norfolk State was fortunate to have
him as a coach." Conley graduated from NSU in 1968 with
a bachelor's degree in health and physical education. He
was a captain of the men's track team as one of legendary
coach William "Dick" Price's first recruits. NSU held a
memorial service on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Douglas Wilder Center.
NO HERITAGE CLASSIC: The Hampton football game versus
Florida A&M on November 1 will be played at Armstrong Stadium in Hampton at 1:30
p.m. Negotiations were in the works to move the game to
Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco for the inaugural Heritage
Classic but when promoters failed to provide an appropriate
bank line of credit to Hampton covering the expenses of the
trip, discussions ceased. The deadline for completing the
negotiations was September 10.
