How They Did It

­ Grambling State 45, Alabama A&M 14
Grambling QB Bruce Eugene threw for 430 yards completing 27 of 55 passes and hit on three touchdown passes while also running for two scores in the Tigers (2-1, 1-0 SWAC W) rout in Shreveport. The 2002 SWAC Championship Game rematch was more like a mismatch as the Tigers built leads of 17-0 at the half and 31-14 after three quarters. A&M (1-2, 0-1 SWAC E) RB Jeremiah Bonds ran for 113 yards on 19 carries. Grambling DB Seneca Lee had a 79-yard interception of Tim Robinson returned for a second quarter TD, one of three picks of Robinson passes. Reserve QB Johnny Keith (11-25, 126 yds.) engineered both Bulldog scores throwing two third quarter TD passes.

­ Winston-Salem State 33, Virginia State 27
WSSU (2-1, 1-0 CIAA W) rallied from a 21-0 first half deficit and scored on a five-yard Willie Byrd touchdown with 30 seconds left to upend Virginia State (1-2, 0-1 CIAA E). The Rams scored four straight touchdowns to take a 25-21 lead with 9:07 left in the game but the Trojans answered to go up 27-25 on a 42-yard TD run by Michael Watkins with 3:44 left. Byrd, who finished with 141 rushing yards, then led a trio of backs that ground out most of the yards in a 11-play, 64-yard drive that produced the winning score. The Rams ran for a total of 226 yards. Brandon Hussey had a 75-yard punt return with 3:44 in the second half to pull the Rams to within 21-13. QB Kevin Jones threw for 201 yards and three TDs to lead VSU.

­ Alabama State 49, Alcorn State 28
Alabama State (2-1, 1-0 SWAC E) scored 42 second half points to knock off Alcorn State (1-2, 0-1 SWAC E) and take the early lead in the SWAC East Division race. RB Keldrick Williams ran for 98 yards and scored three TDs (35, 6 and 2 yards). Alcorn QB Donald Carrie was 16 for 29 for 201 yards and two TDs, both to Corvin Johnson (5 rec., 139 yds.), but he also threw three picks, one returned 22 yards by Erlin Sanders for a third quarter TD.

­ S. C. State 27, Morgan State 21
SC State (1-2, 1-0 MEAC) shredded the Morgan State (1-2, 0-1 MEAC) defense for 230 rushing yards, led by 155 from Coty Martin, and 229 passing yards from QB Reese McCampbell, to get its first win.

­ Southern 35, N. C. A&T 16
Southern (3-0, 1-0 SWAC W) put up 22 straight third quarter points to run out from a 6-3 halftime advantage and down the Aggies (2-1, 0-0 MEAC) at the first Las Vegas Classic. Jaguar QB Quincy Richard hit on 25 of 32 passes for 268 yards and two TDs without an interception, and also ran in from six yards out, to lead Southern. A&T scored late on two long TD passes (59 and 77 yards) from QB Rico Watkins who hit three of six passes for 144 yards. Doug Brown (5 rec., 103 yds.) caught the 59-yarder and Kenneth Perry (3 rec., 114 yds.) had the 77-yarder.

­ Tennessee State 44, Jackson State 14
TSU (2-1) RBs Carlos Wright (14 car., 113 yds., 1 TD) and Charles Anthony (15 car., 110 yds., 2 TDs) both topped the 100-yard mark to lead the Blue Tigers to a blowout win over the struggling JSU Tigers (0-3, 0-0 SWAC E). TSU added two special teams scores on a blocked punt return in the first quarter to open the scoring and a 75-yard punt return from Patrick Jenkins to close it out. JSU QB Robert Kent (29 of 48) threw for 325 yards and two scores but it was not nearly enough.

­ Albany State 34, W. Georgia 7
ASU (2-1, 1-0 SIAC) QB Uyl Joiner (22-30) threw for 322 yards and three TDs and RB Rodrico Williams ran 10 times for 106 yards including a 63-yard TD scamper as the Golden Rams won on the road. ASU outgained UWG 322 yards to seven in the second half to pull away from a 14-7 halftime lead.
