How They Did It

 Alabama State 38, Florida A&M 22
Alabama State (1-0, 0-0 SWAC E) stunned Florida A&M (0-1) and the day's largest crowd of 54,451 at Detroit's Ford Field with a relatively easy win. Richard Rowe had two long punt returns that staked the Hornets to an early lead. He brought one back 51 yards for TD in the first quarter and returned another 63 yards that set up a second first-quarter TD. Rowe later blocked a early fourth quarter field goal attempt that teammate Erlin Sanders returned 65 yards for a TD after the Rattlers had pulled within a touchdown (28-22). Anthony Johnson added a 22-yard field goal for the final margin.

 Miles 43, Tuskegee 11
Miles (1-0,.1-0 SIAC) pulled off the Saturday's biggest shocker by humbling three-time SIAC champ Tuskegee (0-1, 0-1 SIAC) behind three TD passes and one TD run from all-conference QB Nickolas Smith. Tuskegee was held to one yard rushing, threw two interceptions among four turnovers, fumbled in its own end zone and a had a snap go over the head of its punter.

 Bethune-Cookman 62, Savannah State 12
The BCSP #1 Wildcats got 117 rushing yards and one TD to go along with 179 passing yards and two TDs from star QB Allen Suber in the rout. Freshman wingback Eric Weems had four TDs, two running ( 8, 8) and two receiving (48, 56). The Wildcats led 48-0 at the half.

Fort Valley State 23, Morehouse 10
FVSU (1-0, 1-0 SIAC) former junior college all-American Derrick Wimbush ran 55 yards for a TD in the third quarter to give FVSU a lead it did not surrender in downing Morehouse for the sixth straight season. Wimbush rushed for a total of 171 yards in the game while all-conference RB Duron Croson added 81 rushing yards as the Wildcats rolled up 365 yards in total offense. Morehouse RB John David Washington rushed for 101 yards despite missing most of the third quarter with leg cramps.

Virginia State 16, Norfolk State 15
A missed PAT allowed Virginia State (1-0, 0-0 CIAA E) to escape with the narrow win at the Labor Day Classic in Norfolk. Kicker Tony Gomez's PAT attempt sailed wide left after NSU pulled within one point with a fourth quarter TD run by Monte Anthony. VSU had taken a 16-9 lead on a 67-yard TD strike from QB Kevin Jones to P.J. Berry in the third quarter. Jones also connected with Eric Plant on a 25-yard scoring strike in the first quarter and finished with 239 yards passing. Berry hauled in three passes for 135 yards.

 Villanova 41, Hampton 6
Hampton played without starting QB Tim Frazier (sore elbow) in Thursday's loss to 12th-ranked Villanova. True freshman Alonzo Coleman provided the only spark for the Pirates rushing for 73 yards on 15 carries, including a 2-yard touchdown.

Black college teams in Div. II may not be winning games against the top ranked teams in the division but they're getting closer.
Winston-Salem State (0-1, 0-0 CIAA W) duked it out to the wire with 3rd-ranked Carson-Newman before falling 21-14.
Albany State (0-1, 0-0 SIAC) battled 2nd-ranked Valdosta State before succumbing 21-3.
