Onnidan's Black College Sports Online

An Overview of the Black College Sports Market

There are 114 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States with enrollments approaching 300,000 students. At least 75 to 80 of these institutions field athletic teams which serve as sources of pride and entertainment for their schools.

Over 3 million fans attend home games at the 52 black colleges that play football. In addition the four black college athletic conferences (Southwestern Athletic Conference {SWAC}, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference {SIAC}, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference {MEAC}, and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association {CIAA}) are perennial leaders in home attendance in their respective NCAA divisions.

Between regular season home games and special events like homecomings and classics, black college football games average over 275,000 fans per week. This loyalty to black college sports carries over into basketball where an event such as the CIAA Tournament has become the third largest basketball tournament in America ... regardless of division.

The alumni and supporters of HBCUs are spread throughout the United States. They occupy high positions in major corporations and dominate the ranks of African-Americans in the legal and medical professions. HBCUs have produced the largest number of African-American architects and engineers in the United States as well as a lion's share of America's black educators.

Surveys indicate that the black college sports audience is upscale, professional and highly educated. Their income level is high.

They thirst for information about "their" schools and are increasingly using online communication to quench that desire.
