Baton Rouge, LA - Funeral arrangements for former Southern University and Charlotte Hornetbasketball great Bobby Phills have been finalized, both in his native land of Baton Rouge, LA and inhis adopted home in Charlotte, NC, as the Jaguar nation continues in peril over the tragic passing ofone of its most beloved sons.
Funeral services will be held in Charlotte, NC at the Central Church of God, located at 5301 SardisRoad, Charlotte, NC, on Friday, January 14 at 2 p.m. Visitation and viewing of the body is scheduledfrom 10 am to 1:55 p.m.
For grieving, local members of the nation wishing to pay their final respects to Phills and family,funeral services will be held in Baton Rouge, LA on Sunday, January 16 at 1 p.m., in the F.G. ClarkActivity Center on the Southern University campus. Visitation and viewing privileges are scheduledfrom 11 a.m. until 12:55 p.m.
Winnfield Funeral Horne (7221 Plank Rd. Baton Rouge, LA 70811) has procured funeralarrangements and will preside over the Baton Rouge area services. A private burial will take place atGreen Oaks Cemetery in Baton Rouge, following the services.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of this outstanding human being," commented SouthernUniversity Chancellor Edward R. Jackson in a prepared statement relative to the passing of BobbyPhills.
"This young man represented the very best of Southern University. He was not only a world classathlete, but also a world class humanitarian."
The Southern University family has initiated contingencies, with occurrences forthcoming, by whichto pay homage to the fallen athlete, whose four-year career at Southern (1987-90) still ranks amongthe school's best.
Saturday's home basketball game versus Alabama A&M has been dedicated to the memory ofPhills and will include a standing presentation of the #34 jersey worn by him during his stay at Southern. The ceremony will be presided over by Chancellor Jackson.
