| Hampton Captures Virginia All Sport SurveyJune 17, 2000Hampton, VA - Hampton University has finished first in the 1999-2000 Virginia Sports Information Director's Association State Survey (VASID). This is the Pirates first state title since joining Division I in 1995. The Pirates finished 2nd in both the overall standings and men's standings in 1997-98. "This is a tremendous accomplishment for Hampton University as a whole and the Athletic Department specifically," said Dr. Dennis Thomas, Hampton's athletics director. "Having been in Division-I since 1995 and winning the All Sport Survey for Division I Institutions speaks well of the advancement of our program in a short amount of time. Hampton won 63 percent of their Division I intercollegiate athletic contests in 1999-2000 to win the 22nd Annual VASID State Survey. Hampton won .687 percent of their men's contests and .597 percent of their women's. Hampton won MEAC titles in both men's indoor track and field and women's basketball. James Madison finished second with 62 percent and the University of Virginia finished third with 59 percent. The survey began in 1978-1979 and includes only winning percentages of sports with NCAA sponsored championships. Old Dominion won seven of the first eight overall titles, then again in 1993-94, 1995-96 and last year. Virginia dominated five years (1988-89 - 1992-93), then again in 1996-97 and 1997-98. George Mason won in 1986-87, and James Madison won in 1981-82, 1987-88 and 1994-95.
