Former Jackson State golfer Tim O'Neal came up short last week in his attempt to qualify for the PGA Tour.
Playing in second stage play of the PGA Q School at the Greenlefe Golf and Country Club in Haines City, Florida last week, O'Neal shot 76-70-73-75 for a disappointing six-over-par 294 . He finished tied for 41st in that 78-player field. He needed to finish in the top 20 in the field to advance to the final stage and earn exemption to the Buy.com Tour (formerly Nike Tour). The cutoff score was at even par.
Second stage play was staged at six sites around the country with the 120 survivors (top 20 at each site) advancing to final stage play along with exempted players from other tours. A total of 169 will be competing this year in the final stage. The top 35 and ties in the final stage get their PGA Tour card.
O'Neal had advanced past the first stage two weeks earlier.
