
Dover, DE --- Former Delaware State University athletic director and coach James H. "Fuzzy" Williams has passed. Williams died Tuesday, December 21 in Phoenix, AZ after a lengthy illness. He was 79.
Williams was Delaware State's Director of Athletics from 1962 to 1978. He also served as the school's baseball coach, leading the team to consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division titles in 1969 and 1970.
Williams was DSU's Director of Athletics when the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) was formed, and was a driving force behind the school's decision to become a charter member of the newly formed league. He served on the first committee to draft the MEAC organizational structure, constitution and by-laws, and philosophy.
Williams was inducted into the MEAC Hall of Fame in 1995.
Prior to his years at Delaware State, he coached football at Elizabeth City State College (NC) and Bethune-Cookman College.
Williams earned a bachelor's degree from North Carolina Central University and a master's from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He was a football, basketball, baseball, and boxing standout at North Carolina Central.
Williams is survived by his wife Juanita, and his three daughters, Ivy, Sherri, and Carole.
