Gregory, 61, currently serves as Director of Athletics and Chairman of the Department of Physical Education at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, a fellow member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

He will succeed William "Bill" Collick, who will leave his post as Delaware State's Director of Athletics next month to become Dean of Students and head football coach at Sussex Tech (DE) High School.

"We are very pleased to have an individual with Dr. Gregory's experience and expertise," DeLauder said. "We believe he will provide exceptional leadership to our athletic program. He is quite familiar with our conference and joins us with an impressive background in leadership. We are confident he will guide our athletic program to higher levels of prestige and distinction."

During his 11 years at MD-Eastern Shore, Gregory directed the planning and construction of the university's 15 million-dollar state-of-the-art athletics and fitness center, completed in February 1999. He is also credited with establishing three new Division I teams (soccer, softball, bowling), bringing to 14 the number of varsity sports at the Princess Anne, MD school.

Gregory was instrumental in the creation of MD-Eastern Shore's athletics compliance program, and the establishment of fund raising campaigns involving alumni, corporations, small businesses and individuals. During his tenure, the university also increased its student-athlete graduation rate by 44 percent.

As chairman of the university's Department of Physical Education, he helped develop a rehabilitation services component within the physical education curriculum.

The past three years, Gregory has served as chairman of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference basketball committee and the annual conference tournament.

From 1971 to 1989, Gregory was a professor and coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, CT. From 1975 to '89, he was head basketball coach at the Academy, twice earning Commonwealth Coast Conference "Coach-of-the-Year" honors. In addition, he served as head track and field coach (1975-82) and an assistant basketball coach (1971-75).

While at the Coast Guard Academy, Gregory founded the USCGA Genesis Club, a support organization for minority cadets. He also helped develop the academy's cardiopulmonary resuscitation program.

From 1967 to 1971, Gregory served as an assistant professor of physical education and head track coach at Central State University in Ohio. He was named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District 22 Coach-of-the-Year each of his four seasons.

Gregory earned a Doctorate of Education in higher education administration from Indiana University. He holds a Master of Science in physical education from Moorhead State College in Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts in health, physical education and recreation from Dakota Wesleyan University in South Dakota.
