
BALTIMORE -- Coppin State College athletics directorRon "Fang" Mitchell has announced the resignation of head women's basketballcoach Jennie Hall, effective immediately, and has named Derek Brown interimhead coach for the
remainder of the season.
Hall, after being suspended indefinitely for failingto show up for the Lady Eagles' game at Morgan State on Saturday, Dec.11, and not informing Mitchell or associate athletics director Desney Byrdthat she would not be at the game, officially submitted her resignationlast night.
Hall was named 1999 Mid-Eastern Athletic ConferenceCoach of the Year after guiding Coppin to a 13-14 record (11-7 MEAC) anda fourth place league finish last season, her first at the helm of theLady Eagle program and her first as a head coach. She had a 16-20 recordat Coppin.
Brown, also associate head coach of the Coppin men'sbasketball team, is in his 14th season at Coppin State and 22nd overallassisting Mitchell, who serves as head men's basketball coach in additionto his duties as athletics director. Brown served as an assistant duringMitchell's eight-year tenure at Gloucester County College.
"Coach Brown will remain associate head coach ofthe men's team, but some of his duties will be reduced to enable him tocoach the women's team as well," said Mitchell. "I have a lot of confidencein him as both a coach and a person, and I think he is the best personfor the job right now.
"We are always looking for the best possible solutionfor our student athletes, and I feel this is it."
The Lady Eagles (3-6, 2-1 MEAC) will be in actionagain this Friday, Dec. 17, at Bucknell. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
