Hicks, 29, a native of Baltimore, has been on the staff at Coppin for the past six years, having started as a volunteer in 1993 before being named assistant coach in 1995.

"Carl has paid his dues, and he's had the opportunity to work under one of best coaches on the East Coast in Ernest Barrett," said Coppin athletics director Fang Mitchell.

"He's gained a lot of experience, and I look for him to continue the success we've had at Coppin. I'm positive he will do a good job."

During his tenure with the Eagles, Hicks has helped guide the women's cross country team to three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles (1993-94, 1996) and the men's team to one conference crown (1993).The women's track and field team claimed MEAC indoor and outdoor titles in 1996 and produced All-Americans in the 800 in 1994 (Diana Pitts) and 1996 (Twana Allen).

Hicks also helped coach Ian Roberts, the school's first men's All-American, in 1998.

Hicks received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1993 from Maryland Eastern Shore, where he was a standout half-miler for the Hawks. He was a three-time NCAA qualifier and won two MEAC 800-meter titles.

While at Baltimore's Northwestern High, Hicks was a two-time state champion in the 800.

Hicks replaces Barrett, who recently accepted the head coaching job at Maryland Eastern Shore.
