| Derek Brown Named Permanent Head Women's Basketball at Coppin StateFebruary 10, 2000BALTIMORE -- Coppin State College has named Derek Brown permanent head coach of the women's basketball team.
"I know as well as anyone what a quality coach and quality individual Derek Brown is," said athletics director Ron "Fang" Mitchell, who also serves as head men's basketball coach. "I can't think of anyone more qualified for the position, and I know he will continue to do an outstanding job." Brown, who has guided the Lady Eagles (11-11, 9-4 MEAC) to a 7-5 mark since taking over as head coach, is in his 14th season at Coppin and 22nd overall assisting Fang Mitchell. The Camden, N.J., native will continue his duties with the men's team but has had his workload reduced so that he may accommodate both teams. He has helped guide the Eagles to seven straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season titles, 11 straight winning seasons and three NCAA tournament appearances. Prior to coming to Coppin, he and Mitchell were together for eight seasons at Gloucester County College. During his playing days, Brown was a star at Woodrow Wilson High School. In his senior season, the former guard led his team to a 27-0 record and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Championship. He later attended Montclair State University, where he played three years of varsity basketball. "This is a great opportunity," said Brown. "I have the chance to run my own program and stay at Coppin State at the same time."
