| McIver and Two Others Honored in St. LouisJune 26, 2000Morgan State Sports Information Director Joe McIver and two other gentlemen with HBCU roots were honored at the Kickoff Luncheon for the Annual Workshop of the College Sports Information Directors of America. McIver, former Hampton SID Mike Ballweg and former CIAA SID Wayne Block each received 25 year awards at the Luncheon. ESPN's Robin Roberts was the keynote speaker. McIver became Morgan State's first full-time sports information director one day after he graduated from school in June, 1974. He played on the 1974 NCAA College Division national championship team that also featured NBA performer Marvin "The Human Eraser" Webster. McIver is currently the assistant athletics director for marketing and media relations at MSU where he has also been acting public relations director (1979-80) and acting director of athletics (1982-83). He is currently president of the Black College Sports Information Directors Association and is acive in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference activities having formed the sports information directors association for the conference and spearheaded several SID summer workshops. Ballweg is currently the sports information director at Rhode Island. The 1975 graduate of Virginia Tech was an assistant athletic director and sports information director at Hampton following a stint as an intern in the VPI sports information office. Since leaving Hampton, Ballweg has been director of sports media relations at Ohio University, SID at West Virginia and SID at Virginia Commonwealth. He spent two years as the assistant executive director at the Blockbuster/Carquest Bowl before taking the position at Rhode Island in 1994. Block has just completed his 17th year as sports information director at Christopher Newport. Prior to taking the position, he was sports information director at the CIAA under former commissioner Bob Moorman. Block began his career as a student assistant at Hofstra University. After two years as a sportswriter in Albany, Block was hired as SID at Rensselaer. Two years later he went to C.W. Post, then Virginia Tech before taking the job at the CIAA.
