SIAC Track and Field Championships
Notes from the Head Timer - Day 1 - April 15:

An interesting day indeed. After arriving in Atlanta on Wednesday night, my boy and I drove the 2.5 hour trip to Albany, GA where the 1999 SIAC Track & Field Championships were being held this year. After 3 years at Savannah State and countless years at the City of Albany's "public" track (a.k.a. "The Pit"), Albany State is hosting the SIAC championships on their campus.

The track is great. Nice and fast for the sprinters of this group, yet springy enough for us jumpers. There is a special tent that they have set up for me and my "crew" at the Start/Finish line.

The first day of the Multis was uneventful. Nothing special.

The 4x100m was very interesting. In the first heat, Morehouse bobbled the stick and looked like they were out of the final for sure, until Albany State dropped the stick on the last handoff and did not finish. This let Morehouse grab at least a point in what looks like to be one of the fastest 4x100m finals in SIAC history! Pretty exciting.

In the 800m, three of the top runners in DII easily qualified, but not faster than top qualifier Eric Teemer from ASU. Looks to be a smoking final!

Morehouse showed their domination in the distance races. In the 10,000m were they went 1-2-3. A preview for things to come?

In the field events, Albany State asserted dominance by winning the Mens and Womens Long Jump, Womens Shot, and placing 3 competitors in the top 6 in Mens Shot. The field events should keep this battle for the SIAC team title fairly close.

Tomorrow things heat up with prelims in the 100m, 400m, 1500m, and hurdles. The pole vault, discus, and triple jump titles will be decided as well.

For all of those rolling in, make sure you stop by the "control tent" and give a shout out!
