
INSTITUTE, WV-- Marshall assistant coach Bryan Poore has been named head coach of the men's basketball program at West Virginia State. He was introduced at a press conference, last Tuesday, on the Institute campus.
Poore will replace Robert Marshall, who resigned in early February of last season, The 34-year-old Poore is a graduate of Winfield High School and West Virginia State College, and received a master's degree in physical education from Marshall. Poore spent the last eight seasons coaching as an assistant under Greg White, including the last three at Marshall. He also served as an assistant to White at the University of Charleston from 1989 to 1995.
Poore was named interim head coach at Charleston during the 1995-96 season when White was an assistant coach at UCLA under Jim Harrick. Poore's first coaching experience came under Tex Williams at Alderson- Broaddus College, where he also served as sports Information director during the 1987-88 season. The following season, Poore became the assistant varsity coach and head coach of the freshman team at Hurricane High School.
Poore was one of four finalists for the job at West Virginia State. The other top candidates included Jeff Boals, an assistant coach at UC; Scott Shepherd, an Elkins native and the head coach at Hargrave Military Academy; and Pon Moore, a former basketball standout at WVSC and current Head Women's Coach at Concordia of NY.
