May 12, 1999

NORFOLK, VA -- Norfolk State University has named Orby Moss as an assistant vice president for student affairs and director of intercollegiate athletics. Moss comes from Georgia State University where he has been athletics director for the past nine years.

"Mr. Moss is an experienced professional administrator and leader with a history of developing successful intercollegiate athletics programs," said Dr. marie McDemmond, NSU President. "We are highly impressed not only with Mr. Moss' athletic achievements at Georgia State, but also his commitments to academics, gender equity, professionalism and integrity."

Moss became the fourth athletics director in Georgia State history in July, 1990 after serving eight years as director of athletics at North Carolina A&T. He also served as athletics director for four years at the University of the District of Columbia (Division II) and for one year at Siena Heights College (NAIA).

Moss was at A&T when NSU's newly hired head football coach, Mo Forte, coached the Aggies to a MEAC football title in 1986. During Moss' stint in Greensboro, in addition to the football championship, the Aggies won seven straight MEAC men's basketbal ltitles and went on to 11 NCAA post season tournament appearances.

He has been cited for the development of the successful Program for Academic Support Services (P.A.S.S.) that helped Georgia State athletes in their classroom performance. Georgia State's graduation rate for student-athletes has been reported at 90%.

"He will insist on integrity in our athletics programs and build on the tradition of excellence in athletics at Norfolk State," said Dick Price, who retires at NSU's athletics director at the end of June.

A native of Wisconsin and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, Moss got his start in athletic administration as assistant AD at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (four years) after 10 years as a coach, teacher and administrator in the Racine, Wisc., public schools. He received his master's degree at Winona State University (Minn.) in 1971 and also did post-graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Moss will be formally introduced at a press conference on May 18 in the President's Conference Room in Harrison B. Wilson Hall on the Norfolk State campus.
