Bethune-Cookman, Lincoln (MO) and Hampton take titles in National Minority Golf Championship

Port St. Lucie, Fla. --Bethune-Cookman College won its first Division I Men's title and Hampton University took the Women's Division crown in the 13th National Minority College Golf Championship Thursday at the PGA Golf Club's North Course.

B-CC eased to its first national men's golf title with a 54-hole total of 8-under-par 856, following the success of the school's women's team which captured the 1998 title. Seven-time champion Jackson State University was second at 884, followed by Tennessee State at 896. Bethune-Cookman juniors Craig Billing of Helston, England, was medalist with a 9-under-par 207, including a closing 2-under-par 70. Philip Worthington of Reading, England, and Jackson State sophomore Kevin Newell of Indianapolis, Ind., shared second-place at 214. Newell had a 68 and Worthington a 75.

Lincoln University of Jefferson City, Mo., a first-time entrant, rolled to the Division II title with a 904 total, led by freshman Mike Roling of Jefferson City, Mo., whose final-round 1-under-par 71 gave him a 3-over-par 219 total.

Hampton won the Women's Division crown with a team total 1128, lead by freshman Christina Dyson of Chicago, the medalist in the Women's Team Division with an 84 and 248 total. Crystal Wilson from Chicago State won the Independent Women's Division with a tournament total of 300.

The National Minority College Golf Championship featured a record field of 129 men and women golfers representing 22 colleges and universities. The championship is co-sponsored by The PGA of America and the National Minority College Golf Scholarship Fund of Highland Hills, Ohio.
