Albany State announces 1999 football schedule

March 29, 1999

Albany State University (ASU) Athletics Director Dan Land and Head Football Coach Hampton Smith have announced the 1999 Golden Rams football schedule. The upcoming season promises to be exciting, Land says.

"I have made several predictions for the 1999 season. First, the season will be an exciting one for the Golden Rams and fans. Second, we will beat Valdosta and Fort Valley this year, and third, we will win the SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) championship," Land said. "We had some disappointments last season, but we're not going to let anything stand in our way this year. We are going to the top."

Albany State's 11-game slate includes four home games at Hugh Mills Memorial Stadium, three football classics and four games against teams from three different conferences. Only two of the road games are out of the state of Georgia, Land said.

The Golden Rams will kickoff the season on the road against Gulf South Conference foe, Valdosta State University Blazers, on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. in Valdosta, and face the Miles College Golden Bears in a conference game on Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. (CST) in Fairfield, Ala. ASU's home open is against SIAC rival Kentucky State University Thorobreds on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.

The Golden Rams will travel to Athens, Ga., to face the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers in the First Annual Classic City Football Classic on Sept. 18 at 2:30 p.m. The game, which will be played at Clarke Central High School's Billy Henderson Stadium, is sponsored by the Black Men of Athens, Inc. ASU has added a new team to this year's schedule, the Fayetteville State University Broncos of Fayetteville, N.C. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) team will travel to Albany on Sept 25 to play at 1 p.m.

Get set for the Second Annual Music City Classic in Macon, Ga., as the Golden Rams take on the Tigers of Savannah State University on Oct. 2 at 4 p.m.

ASU will host the Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m., but will travel to Atlanta to face the Clark Atlanta University Panthers on Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m. in a conference showdown.

The Homecoming '99 game will pit the Golden Rams against the Wolverines of Morris Brown College on Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m. ASU will travel to Salisbury, N.C. to play the Livingstone College Blue Bears of the CIAA on Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.

The Golden Rams will finish its regular season on Nov. 13 in the 10th Annual Fountain City Classic against conference rival, Fort Valley State University Wildcats. The game starts at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ga.
