S.C. State coaches get contract extensions

Orangeburg, SC - Two South Carolina State coaches have been given contract extensions.

Bulldog head football coach Willie Jeffries and head men's basketball coach Cy Alexander were recommended for rollovers by by SCSU athletics director Timothy Autry. Autry's recommendations were endorsed by President Leroy Davis and approved by the school's Board of Trustees.

Jeffries, who is in the final year of a three-year pact, has been given a one-year extension, which begins July 1, 2001 and will run to June 30, 2002. The terms of the agreement, which is a termination contract for the long-time Bulldog coach, calls for a salary of $104,000. His salary for the current year is $100,000.

Jeffries is in his 18th year overall at SCSU, and the 12th of a second tenure as Bulldog head coach. He is the winningest football coach in school with a 119-64-4 record. The Union native and SCSU graduate is 170-119-6 during his 27-year collegiate coaching career. The Bulldogs were 4-6 in 1999

Alexander, also in final year of an agreement, received a three-year agreement, which commences July 1, 2001 and runs through June 30, 2004. Alexander, who will earn $100,000 this year, will be paid $104,000 the first year, $108,160 the second year, and $112,486 in the final contract year.

Alexander recently completed his 13th season as men's basketball coach. The Winston-Salem, North Carolina native and Catawba (NC) College alumnus, has compiled a 223-160 record while guiding the Bulldogs to four NCAA Championship appearances. SCSU was 20-14 last season and earned its second NCAA playoff berth in three seasons.
