Tennessee State promotes from within to get new women's basketball coachOctober 5, 2000Nashville, TN - Tennessee State University has promoted Valencia L. Jordan, 37, to become head women's basketball coach. Jordan replaces former coach Teresa L. Phillips, who was promoted to Associate Athletics Director and Senior Women's Administrator.
"She has endured the test of the coaching profession, and has proven her coaching ability and loyalty to student-athletes and the University for eleven years", said TSU Director of Athletics Dr. James Smith. "We are proud to promote her to the position of head women's basketball coach. She has displayed a relentless work ethic, and has shown her love and knowledge of the TSU experience." Jordan attended and played basketball for Fisk University from 1981-82. She transferred to Austin Peay State University and played from 1982-85 averaging 13 points per game. She graduated from Austin Peay with a B.S. degree in 1986. In 1996, she received her master's degree in health and physical education from Tennessee State. Jordan is married to Samuel Jordan and they have two children; a son Cameron and a daughter Kamri. She is a member of the Black Coaches Association, Women's Basketball Coaches Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
