Tarvis Williams selected as Pre-Season Player of the Year

October 6, 2000

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Hampton University, last year's regular season co-runners-up has been picked to win the regular season this year. The Pirates finished the 1999-00 campaign with a MEAC record of 13-5. South Carolina State University was selected as the second-placed team. Last year they won the regular season race and the MEAC Tournament. Coppin State was selected to finish third, followed by North Carolina A&T in fourth-place; Bethune-Cookman in fifth-place; Norfolk State in sixth; Morgan State in seventh and Florida A&M in eighth. Maryland Eastern Shore, Delaware State and Howard University round out the ninth, tenth and eleventh spots, respectively.

Hampton forward Tarvis Williams has been selected as the 2000-2001 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Pre-Season Player of the Year and heads the Pre-season All-MEAC First Team, as voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors. Williams, a 6'9" senior form Maysville, North Carolina has been one of the top shot-blockers in the nation during his three-year stint with Hampton.

Joining Williams in the frontcourt will be 6'8" forward Dexter Hall of South Carolina State and 6'8" forward Darrell Neal of Norfolk State. Neal finished last year ranked eighth in the nation in rebounding with an average of 10.4 per game. He also tossed in 10.1 points per game. Hall's 1999-2000 averages were 4.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

The first-team backcourt will consist of the Brown brothers (no relation) Coppin State's Joe Brown and Hampton's Marseilles Brown. Both are seniors that transferred into the MEAC last year. Joe comes from Hofstra, and Marseilles from the University of Richmond (VA).

Marseilles averaged 16.0 points and 6.0 assists per game last year, while Joe threw in 13.0 points and grabbed 4.1 rebounds per game.

The 2000-2001 pre-season All-MEAC second team backcourt consists of James Miller (NCA&T) and Rasheem Sims (Coppin St.). While the frontcourt consists of Andre Matthews (Del. St.), Bruce Jenkins (NCA&T) and Curtis King (Morgan St.).
