GSU'S BROWN WINS MVP HONOR
ALABAMA STATE WINS FIRST-EVER SWAC CROSSCOUNTRY TITLE, UPSETS GRAMBLING WOMEN

PRAIRIE VIEW, Tex. -- Favored Grambling State University saw its streakof five consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference women's cross countrychampionships come to an end here on Monday as Alabama State Universitycaptured its first-ever title.

The 2000 SWAC championship was held on a 3.2-mile course at the WilliamJ. Nicks Athletic Complex on the campus of Prairie View A&M University.In pulling off the upset, the ASU Lady Hornets edged the defendingchampions by just four points, 71 points to GSU's 76. ASU's scoring runnersfinished in sixth, 12th, 14th, 16th and 23rd places while GSU's top runnerscame in first, seventh, 17th, 22nd and 29th.

Horace Crump, Alabama State's head coach, was jubilant after the victory."This is our first cross country championship and I'm proud of theseyoung ladies and proud for Alabama State University," said Crump. "As theysay, winning breeds winning. We hope that this championship will carry overinto the indoor and outdoor seasons.

"I give credit to Richie Beene, my assistant coach," added Crump. "He'sreally worked hard with the team. We have a lot of young kids who'refreshmen. They're not really cross country runners ... they're quarter-milersand sprinters who worked hard and worked together."

Leading ASU's charge was Kauisha Smith, who finished sixth with at timeof 20:02. The other Alabama State scorers were Johnia Jolly, who finished12th with a time of 20:32, Shelneka Adams, 14th at 20:59, Afua Boahema, 16that 21:20 and Genese Hobbs, 23rd at 22:01.

Grambling State's top finisher was Christiana Brown, who captured MVPhonors with a meet-best time of 19:29. Brown said she wanted to close outher final year at GSU with a bang.

"In running for the past three years, I never came in first," statedBrown. "This is my last season and I want to go out with a bang. I wantedto win it so very much that I found it within myself to have the strength todo it. I'm very happy I did it and very proud of myself."

GSU's other scorers were Shaun Crawford, who finished seventh with a timeof 20:15, Jennifer Keyes, who finished 17th at 21:25, Dianna Lee, 22nd at21:52, and Kesha Guillory, 29th at 22:39.

Other top 10 finishers included Alcorn State's Lakesha McDonald (2nd at19:30) and Andreece Richardson (8th at 20:16), Jackson State's Judy Ford (3rdat 19:32) and Patricia Robinson (5th at 19:43), Southern's Kenya Warren (4that 19:36) and Texas Southern's Cicely Pinkston (9th at 20:18).
