6,000 expected to attend 2nd Annual SWAC Youth ExpoNovember 28, 2000BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The second annual HealthSouth Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Week starts in earnest on Wednesday as nearly 6,000 high school students are expected to participate in the State Farm SWAC Youth Expo. Scheduled for 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. both Wednesday and Thursday, the State Farm SWAC Youth Expo will be staged at Boutwell Auditorium and has as its theme, "Winning With Education."League commissioner Rudy Washington said the event is a perfect way to kick of all of the week's activities. "We're very happy that State Farm has elected to serve as the sponsor for our Youth Expo," stated Washington. "The aim of the Youth Expo is to expose our young people to the academic offerings of our member universities. The fact that State Farm has decided to sponsor the event indicates their commitment to those youngsters as well as their commitment to our community." The expected 6,000 students who'll participate in the State Farm SWAC Youth Expo will come primarily from the Birmingham City Schools and other high schools in the state. Participating students will have chances to win free tickets to Saturday's football game between Alabama A&M University and Grambling State University, which is slated for 1 p.m. at Legion Field in Birmingham. In addition to Alabama A&M and Grambling State, the other SWAC-member schools who'll have booths and recruiting stations at the event include Alabama State University, Alcorn State University, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Jackson State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Prairie View A&M University, Southern University and Texas Southern University. Moreover, recruiters from several other universities will participate in the Youth Expo, including representatives from Miles College, Morris Brown College and Lawson State Community College.
