Central hosts 5th Annual Lady Eagle Basketball ClassicNovember 30, 2000DURHAM, NC -- North Carolina Central University hosts the 2000 Lady EagleBasketball Millennium Classic on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2, inMcLendon-McDougald Gymnasium on the campus of NCCU. The Lady Eagles of N.C.Central welcome teams from Saint Paul's College, Concord College, and SalemInternational University for the fifth annual women's basketball event. The first Lady Eagle Classic of the new Millennium pins NCAA Division II teamsfrom the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) against the WestVirginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). On Friday, Dec. 1, theLady Tigers of St. Paul's (Lawrenceville, VA) challenge the Lady Lions ofConcord (Athens, West Virginia) at 6:00 p.m., and the Lady Eagles of NCCUtip-off against the Lady Tigers of Salem International (Salem, West Virginia)at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 2, St. Paul's plays Salem International at3:00 p.m., while NCCU faces Concord at 5:00 p.m. NCCU (4-2) is led by 6-2 junior forward Amba Kongolo with an average of 18.7points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game. Three other Lady Eagles-- 5-10 freshman guard Shenika Worthy, 6-2 senior center Connie Murdock, and5-5 junior guard Zakia VanHoose -- score more than 6 points per outing. Salem International (1-0) is topped by 5-8 junior guard Twania Bennett, whoamassed 22 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals in the Lady Tigers'94-81 win over Columbia Union on Nov. 21. Fellow junior guard Chrissy Luchuckadded 21 points, 5 steals and 4 assists in the lone game of the season for SIU. Saint Paul's (3-1) owns a balanced offensive threat with 5-5 freshman guardQuisannah Noel and 5-8 freshman forward Shanell Randolph scoring 10.0 pointsapiece, while five other Lady Tigers average more than 6.0 points per game.Concord (2-3) also spreads the scoring load with three players averagingdouble-figures in scoring -- 6-2 freshman center Renee Gagnier (12.8 ppg),5-10 junior forward Christina Plutz (11.6 ppg), and 5-9 sophomore guardJennifer Pollinger (10.8 ppg).
